Afterward is a calm, step-by-step companion for clearing out a whole home after a death or a downsize. You photograph what’s in each room, and it helps you sort everything into a handful of simple piles — what to keep, sell, donate, have looked at, or let go — gives you a rough sense of what things are worth, and points you to local help to carry it away. It’s a project organizer, not an appraisal service and not an auction site.

Afterward is free to use while we’re in early access. There are no surprise charges and no subscription. If that ever changes, we’ll tell you clearly before anything costs money — this is a once-in-a-lifetime task, and we’d never spring a bill on you in the middle of it.

Not at all — please don’t. You can do one drawer, one room, or one afternoon and come back whenever you’re ready. Everything you’ve done is saved and waiting for you. There are no “0% complete” guilt bars here. This is hard, and you’re allowed to take it slowly.

Just an email address and a phone or computer with a camera. You take photos of items (or a whole shelf or room at once), and Afterwarddoes the sorting. No special equipment, no spreadsheets.

Keep — things staying in the family. Sell — worth listing online. Donate — still useful to someone, best given away. Appraise — possibly valuable or unusual enough to have a person look at it before you decide. Let go — ready to be hauled away or recycled. Every item lands in just one of these, so you always know the next step.

When you add a photo, Afterward looks at it and suggests a category, a rough value range, and a one-line reason. It’s tuned for a whole-house cleanout rather than for resellers, so it’s honest about categories that sound valuable but rarely sell today — formal china, silver-plate, crystal, dark-wood furniture — and it’ll gently tell you when donating is the faster, kinder path.

You’re always in charge. If you disagree with a suggestion, you can change the category with one tap, rename the item, or remove it. The suggestion is a starting point to save you effort — never the final word.

Treat them as rough guidance, not gospel. They’re estimates to help you triage quickly — not appraisals, and not suitable for insurance or formal estate valuation. For anything that might be genuinely valuable, Afterward flags it as “Appraise” so you can have a real person take a look before you sell or let it go.

When you add a home’s address, Afterward uses its ZIP code to show relevant donation pickups, junk haulers, and places to sell, for each pile — falling back to trusted national options when there’s no closer match. It also reminds you of a handy rule of thumb: under about $30, selling rarely nets anything after fees and time, so donating or bulking it is usually the better call.

Yes. Your photos and details are private to you and the family members you choose to share a home with. We never use them to train any AI, and we don’t sell or share your data. Photos are stored privately and shown only through short-lived, signed links — not in any public folder. The one thing that leaves your account: when you type an address, that text is sent to a mapping service to suggest matches. Nothing else.

Any time. You can permanently delete a home and everything in it — including the stored photos — from that home’s page. When it’s gone, it’s really gone.

Sign-in and passwords are handled by a trusted authentication service (we never see or store your raw password), everything travels over an encrypted connection, and you can turn on email two-step verification for an extra layer. We’ll also email you if your password changes or a new device signs in, and we sign you out automatically after a long stretch of inactivity. No app can promise it’s impossible to break into — but we’ve worked hard to close the common doors and to fail safely.

Yes. You can invite family by a private link and choose whether they can just view or also make changes. It’s a gentle way to share the load — without turning it into a contest over who gets what.

That’s one of the things we care about most. You can mark any item as a keepsake, attach the story behind it, and keep its photo and memory even after the object itself moves on. You can even gather those into a printable memory book. The memory stays, whether or not the thing does.

Yes. You can export a whole home to a tidy PDF or spreadsheet — every item with its room, category, value range, and notes — which is handy for sharing with family, for the executor, or for donation records. There’s also a donation summary to help at tax time.

Often, yes. In many states a will should be probated and the executor consulted before selling or clearing a loved one’s belongings. We mention this as friendly guidance, not legal advice — when in doubt, it’s worth a quick check before you start letting things go.
